The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced this week the certification of beverage firm S.A. Damm’s two beer breweries against both its Performance Standard and its Chain of Custody standard.
The two breweries in question are Estrella de Levante Fábrica de Cerveza S.A. and Compañia Cervecera Damm, S.L. This week’s certification makes S.A. Damm the world’s first beverage producer to achieve ASI certification.
ASI’s certification of the plants covers a wide range of operations, including packaging and storage of beer in cans, design, waste management and storage, and waste recovery of packaging waste from the end user. In addition to the firm’s two breweries, ASI certified the company headquarters in Barcelona.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said the certification was an important step for another ASI member company as well.
“We sincerely congratulate S.A. Damm on becoming the first beverage company to achieve dual ASI Certification for their two beer brewing facilities and the company headquarters in Spain. The Material Stewardship certification provides assurance that the company is addressing the impacts of their aluminium use via can design, scrap recovery in their plants, and support for systems to recover the cans, post-consumer. The company’s canstock sourcing arrangement with Ball, another ASI Member with dual ASI Certification, means that we can hope to see the ASI on-product label on Damm’s brewery products in the near future.”
ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The certifications, which each last for three years, were audited by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.
Jorge Villavecchia, Damm’s general manager said that the certifications confirmed his company’s commitment to responsible production.
“Damm’s commitment to responsible sourcing is at the heart of our ambition to minimise our impact on society and the environment by delivering top-quality products and services. The Damm value chain has a material impact on our sustainability performance and by joining ASI and with the Certification according Performance Standard and CoC, we will enhance the sustainability credentials of our aluminium beverage cans, ensuring high social, environmental and governance standards. We consider this to be a major milestone that keeps us moving forward on our industry-leading sustainability journey.”
The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association attempts to bring together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
