Russian Federation aluminium behemoth U. C. Rusal said yesterday it plans to invest about US$190 million to modernize electrode production at the Sayanogorsk smelter over the next three years.
Per the firm, the move has two main benefits. Firstly, the improvements will make the anodes run more economically, boosting their energy efficiency indicators. Control of the anodes will be easier, as the anodes will be operated via a digital system that transfers information on the anodes’ operation to a central control point.
The other benefit expected from the modernization is environmental, as the anode-baking furnaces will be refitted with ecologically-friendly new equipment and design. The German firm Riedhammer GmBH has been contracted to supply equipment for the project.
“Today the Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter is one of RUSAL’s most modern and technologically advanced enterprises,” explained Rusal’s CEO Evgenii Nikitin.
“In addition to increasing the energy efficiency of the smelter, the implementation of the project to modernize the production of electrodes will also contribute to reducing the impact of the plant on the environment. Moreover, upon completing the upgrade of the furnaces, SAZ will be able to increase the production of fired anodes for the Company’s smelters to secure the supply of our own high quality raw materials.”
Rusal expects the project to run through the year 2023.
