Atlanta’s rolled aluminium firm Novelis Inc. has entered into a deal to provide high-recycled content flat-rolled aluminium to European skylight and window maker VELUX Group for use in its roof windows.

The agreement will enable VELUX to reduce its carbon emissions to below 4.0 kg of carbon per kilogram of supplied rolled aluminium by the end of 2024. This carbon emissions reduction is part of VELUX’s larger plan of cutting its overall carbon emissions by half by the end of this decade.

Novelis says the aluminium to be supplied under the multiyear deal will have a recycled content of about 70 percent, which is around 40 percent more than the aluminium Novelis currently provides VELUX.

Nikolaj Cederquist, Vice President, Global Procurement, VELUX Group, said in a press release that the new accord will go far in helping his firm achieve its lofty goals.

“The Novelis agreement marks our second strategic aluminium partnership this year as we accelerate actions to decarbonise our products and value chain. Our scope 3 carbon emissions are our largest and they are also the hardest for us to reduce, which is why partnerships will help us go far and faster.”

Stephen Boney, Vice President, Specialty Products, Novelis Europe, says that his firm is eager to begin supplying VELUX with more sustainable materials.

“We are excited that we can help VELUX achieve its ambitious carbon emission reduction goals by supplying low-carbon, sustainable aluminium solutions. As a leader in aluminium sustainability, Novelis recognizes that material innovation and collaboration across the value chain will enable decarbonization, support a circular economy and help us achieve our carbon neutrality goal.”

Novelis is a subsidiary of Mumbai’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. Based in Atlanta, the firm accounts for almost half of Hindalco’s consolidated revenue. The world’s largest recycler of aluminium, Novelis conducts operations in ten different countries, employs around eleven thousand people, and reported US$17.1 billion in net sales for the most recent fiscal year.
