ASI Certifies First Norsk Hydro Extrusion Plant In Mexico

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced last week the certification of Hydro Precision Tubing Reynosa under its Performance Standard. They Reynosa plant obtained Hydro’s first ASI certification in Mexico.

The plant, which is just south of the Rio Grande River, opened in 2006. The 320-strong workforce produces aluminium heat exchange solutions mainly to customers in the automotive and HVACR industries.

Jeffrey L. Insalaco, Vice President responsible for Hydro’s aluminium tubing business in North America, said in a press release that the certification benefits Hydro’s customers a great deal.

“The process leading to this achievement reflects a very strong collaboration between our local organization as well as the support from Hydro Extrusions. Besides improving the stewardship of our value chain, we expect a value that will benefit our customers.”

ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Hydro Reynosa plant produces a wide range of extruded aluminium products, including extruded aluminium shapes, high voltage aluminium cables, and precision drawn tubes. Products made at this plant are used mostly in HVACR systems and other heating and cooling applications.

Overall, aluminium extrusions represent the vast majority of Hydro’s business, with a global customer base of over 30 thousand buyers per year.

The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association brings together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
