Trade group Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certified a trio of Novelis’s North American aluminium plants under its ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) last week.
ASI said in a press release that Novelis production facilities in Georgia, Kentucky, and Ohio join eleven of the company’s plants in Europe and sites in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and Brazil as certified under its various standards.
Novelis’s newly-certified sites in Kentucky and Georgia recycle used beverage cans into aluminium ingot for use in producing new beverage cans. All three sites produce recycled aluminium ingot and sheet that is used to make both aluminium beverage can bodies and ends.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, lauded Novelis for its latest certifications.
“We sincerely congratulate Novelis on achieving these three Performance Standard Certifications among their North American operations. These plants are significant nodes in the North American beverage can market, with one of the plants recycling approximately 20% of the region’s UBCs. We are delighted to see Novelis’ ongoing ASI Certification journey continue to extend through its global operations.”
ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The certifications, which each last for three years, were audited by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
Tom Boney, Executive Vice President and President, Novelis North America, says the certifications are part of its larger sustainability goals.
“This certification is the latest step in our sustainability journey and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing sustainable aluminum solutions to our valued customers. Aligned with our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we aim to collaborate and inspire our suppliers, customers and partners throughout the whole value chain to participate in these responsible practices.”
Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, Vice President of Sustainability, said that the certifications are proof positive of its commitment to sustainability.
“Novelis aims to achieve ASI Certification in all its plants worldwide. The completion of these ASI certifications are part of our ongoing commitment to being a responsible partner to our customers and working with them to achieve their sustainability goals. Adherence to the standards provides a clear indication of the care and commitment that certified companies share regarding human rights, climate change, the environment and circularity with regard to aluminum manufacturing.”
The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association brings together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
