The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) this week certified Italian scrap aluminium recycling and remelting firm Stemin S.p.A. under its Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification for sustainable aluminium production.
The ASI certified Stemin’s (41) Stemin S.p.A., (K4) Stemin S.p.A. and RADIATORI 2000 S.p.A. for production and sale of aluminium alloy ingots produced from scrap aluminium. Stemin’s recycling operations, which accounts for about 18 percent of secondary aluminium recovered in Italy, total around 120 thousand metric tons of scrap aluminium per year, which is converted into about 70 thousand metric tons fo semi-finished aluminium products each year.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, congratulated Stemin on its certification in a press release.
“We sincerely congratulate Stemin S.p.A. on achieving Performance Standard Certification for its recycling and remelting operations in Bergamo, Italy. Before the recycling of aluminium scrap into secondary aluminium ingots at these facilities takes place, various screening, analysis, classification, and sorting processes are undertaken to enable the best possible use of the recovered materials. Its ASI Certification demonstrates that the company’s pursuit of quality outputs also extends to the ESG performance of its production process.”
ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. Third-party audit of the certification was conducted by Bureau Veritas Certification.
Olivo Foglieni, President of Stemin S.p.A., noted the importance to his company of achieving ASI certification.
“Obtaining the prestigious ASI certification, for a relatively young company in the sector like ours, denotes how correctly our vision has always been directed and how much our work is oriented towards sustainability in every aspect. Our products, made primarily from secondary material, ensure low CO₂ emissions, contributing to increased value and responsibility over the entire supply/production chain. We are truly proud of this achievement, which confirms that STEMIN S.p.A. is counted among the best European and global companies in this sector and a point of reference for its customers and partners.”
The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry.
