Aluminium Bahrain Kicks Off ESG Campaign This Week

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) began its Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) campaign this week, focusing on the firm’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon production by 2060.

The campaign, dubbed ‘A Journey, Not A Destination,’ began with a welcome message from Alba’s CEO Ali Al Baqali. His address was broadcast to all Alba’s employees and contractors as well as representatives of other GCC smelters and Gulf Aluminium Council (GAC).

In addition to meeting Net Zero Emissions by 2060, the new ESG program is designed to support Alba ESG Roadmap’s 6 priority areas as well.

“As a leading corporate citizen, we believe in producing responsibly and sustainably,” said Al Baqali. “Through our ESG Roadmap, we aim to establish a purpose driven culture that is focused on long-term value creation for our stakeholders and the society we operate in.”

“We must collectively make the Right Choice for a better future for Alba, Bahrain, and our planet. Through this Campaign, we are pleased to join our peer smelters of the Region and aspire for higher achievements through knowledge-exchange and collaboration.”

Alba’s ESG campaign is one of several such initiatives launched by GCC aluminium smelters this week coordinated by the Gulf Aluminium Council (GAC). Alba’s employees will be delivering presentations each morning this week while inter-department competitions tailored at promoting ESG’s corporate culture will occur in the afternoon.

Alba is one of the largest industrial companies in the Middle East and is the world’s biggest aluminium smelter outside the People’s Republic of China. Originally incorporated in 1968, the company is based in Bahrain and 84% of its total workforce are Bahraini nationals. It began operations in 1971 with a 120,000 metric ton annual capacity. Modernization bumped the output up to 450,000 metric tons in 1992. In the spring of 2005, Alba opened Line 5, raising output by 860,000 metric tons per year. In 2020 Alba’s smelter produced 1,548,500 metric tons of primary aluminium.
