Pittsburgh aluminium pioneer Alcoa Corporation has been named to the 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) as an Aluminum Industry leader after a rigorous selection process and evaluation of its sustainability practices.
The firm takes its place on the DJSI North America Index, which is a listing of the top fifth of North America’s 600 biggest publicly-traded firms on the S&P Global Broad Market Index. The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices have long been recognized by traders as a trustworthy source for information on corporate responsibility and sustainability.
Alcoa’s Senior Vice President for Global Government Affairs and Sustainability Michelle O’Neill explained the importance of his company’s listing on the index in a related press release.
“This listing recognizes Alcoa’s continued leadership in sustainable operations across the aluminum value chain. Our Alcoa values to Act with Integrity, Operate with Excellence and Care for People are the foundation upon which our sustainability journey is built, guiding us as we advance our economic, environmental and social performance.”
The primary factor for inclusion on the list is a comprehensive evaluation of firms’ sustainability practices and performance known as the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Selection criteria are constantly evolving, and continuous improvements in long-term sustainability plans are critical for a company to remain on the list from one year to the next.
